Bathroom fans pull in humid air, and humid air is basically a magnet for dust, hair, and whatever lint escaped your towels. Over a year or two, that gunk cakes onto the fan blades. An unbalanced blade spinning at a few thousand RPM is where that jet-engine whine comes from. Fix: kill the power at the breaker, drop the grille (it usually just pulls down or unclips), and vacuum out the housing. The Motor Bearings Are Tired
If cleaning doesn’t quiet things down, the motor itself might be wearing out. Cheap builder-grade fans use sleeve bearings that dry out over time, and a dry bearing sounds exactly like what you’re hearing: a high-pitched whir with some grinding underneath. You can sometimes buy another year or two by putting a drop of lightweight machine oil on the motor shaft (check your fan’s manual for an oil port, some have one, some don’t). The Ductwork Is the Actual Problem
Sometimes the fan itself is fine and the noise is coming from the flexible duct running through your attic or wall cavity. If that ducting has sagged, kinked, or gotten crushed by insulation, air has to fight its way through a narrower opening, and that turbulence creates noise that echoes right back down into your bathroom. This is the one people miss because it requires an attic crawl to diagnose. If you’ve got access, look for duct that’s drooping, pinched at a joist, or disconnected at a seam. Fans are rated in CFM (cubic feet per minute), and bathrooms need enough airflow to actually clear the humidity, but not so much that the fan is straining. If your fan is more than 10 years old, cleaning and oiling are basically stalling tactics. Newer models use brushless DC motors that run noticeably quieter, sip less electricity, and often include nice extras like humidity sensors that kick the fan on automatically. Installation is a straightforward DIY job if your existing wiring and ducting are in decent shape, usually just matching up the housing size and reconnecting the same wires. If you’re not confident poking around ceiling electrical, this is a fair one to hand off to an electrician for an hour of labor.
Either way, don’t just live with the noise. A screaming fan is annoying, sure, but it’s also often a fan working way harder than it should, which means it’s burning more electricity and wearing out faster.
