You noticed it during the last heat wave. You cranked the fan up to high, finally got comfortable, and then watched the light kit swing like it was trying to escape the ceiling. If this only seems to happen in the thick of summer, you’re not imagining it. Heat and humidity mess with ceiling fans in ways that have nothing to do with how old they are or how well they were installed.

Wood blades absorb moisture, and moisture is not symmetrical
Most ceiling fan blades are some form of pressed wood or MDF with a veneer finish. Wood is porous, and porous things soak up humidity unevenly depending on grain, how they’re stacked in the box at the factory, and honestly just luck. In August, when indoor humidity climbs even with the AC running, one or two blades can absorb slightly more moisture than the others and warp a hair. That’s all it takes. A blade that’s even a few millimeters out of alignment throws the whole rotation off balance, and at ceiling fan speeds, a few millimeters feels like an earthquake.
Metal-bladed fans dodge this specific problem, but they’re not immune to a related one: heat expansion in the motor housing and blade brackets, which can loosen screws that were snug back in April.
Check the boring stuff before you blame the fan itself
Before you assume you need a new fan or a balancing kit, run through this:
- Tighten the screws holding each blade to its bracket. Do this by hand, not with a drill, so you can feel when they’re actually seated.
- Check the screws where the blade brackets attach to the motor housing. These loosen more than people expect.
- Make sure the mounting screws at the ceiling plate are tight, and that the downrod isn’t wobbling in the housing.
- Dust each blade. It sounds too simple to matter, but uneven dust buildup is a legitimate, if minor, contributor to imbalance, and it’s free to fix.
If it’s still wobbling after all that, you’re dealing with an actual weight or alignment discrepancy between blades, and tightening screws won’t touch it.
Measure before you guess
Grab a tape measure and check the distance from each blade tip to the ceiling. They should all be within about an eighth of an inch of each other. If one blade is noticeably lower or higher, that’s your culprit, and it’s almost always the humidity-warped one. You can sometimes correct minor warping by loosening the blade, letting it acclimate in a lower-humidity room for a day, and reattaching it. It’s not a permanent fix, but it buys you the rest of the summer.
Balancing kits actually work, and they’re cheap
If the blades measure evenly but it still wobbles, the fix is a simple ceiling fan balancing kit, which is just a plastic clip and a set of small adhesive weights. You clip the weight onto a blade, run the fan, and see if the wobble improves or worsens, moving it around until you find the sweet spot, then stick the weight down permanently. It takes maybe ten minutes and costs less than a fast food combo meal.
When it’s not the blades at all
Sometimes the wobble is coming from the downrod or the ceiling mount, especially in older installs where the outlet box wasn’t rated for a fan in the first place. If you push up gently on the fan while it’s off and feel the whole assembly shift at the ceiling, that’s an electrical box problem, not a blade problem, and it’s worth a look from an electrician before you run the fan on high again. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented cases where inadequately supported fans have come loose from the ceiling entirely, which is a much worse Tuesday than a little wobble. Most of the time, though, it really is just August doing its thing to a wood blade. Fix the balance, enjoy the breeze, and try not to think about how you’ll be doing this again next July.
