You hit the button. The door starts down, gets about a foot from the floor, then reverses back up like it changed its mind. Somewhere near the bottom of the track, a little light is blinking at you, smug and unhelpful. This is one of the most common garage door complaints out there, and the fix is almost never as dramatic as people assume.
That blinking light belongs to your safety sensors, sometimes called photo eyes. They sit a few inches off the ground on either side of the door opening, facing each other, sending an invisible infrared beam back and forth. If that beam breaks, the door assumes there’s a kid, a dog, or a bike in the way and refuses to close on it. That’s a genuinely great safety feature. It’s also the reason your door has been stuck open all weekend for no visible reason.

The Usual Suspects
Before you assume the opener itself is dying, check the boring stuff first, because it’s almost always the boring stuff:
- Dirty lenses. Garages collect dust, cobwebs, and lawnmower exhaust residue like it’s their job. A film of grime on either sensor lens can weaken the beam enough to cause false trips.
- Misalignment. Sensors get bumped by parked cars, bikes leaning against the wall, or someone vacuuming the garage floor and knocking the bracket. Even a fraction of an inch off can throw the beam off target.
- Direct sunlight. This one surprises people. Low-angle morning or evening sun hitting a sensor directly can overpower the receiver and mimic an obstruction. If your door only misbehaves at certain times of day, this is likely your culprit.
- Something actually in the way. Check for a stray leaf, a spiderweb strung across the beam, or a garden hose coiled at the wrong height. It happens more than you’d think.
How to Actually Fix It
Start by wiping both lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Not a paper towel, which can scratch the plastic over time. Then look at the two sensors and confirm they’re pointing at each other at the same height, roughly 6 inches off the floor. Most brackets have a wing nut you can loosen to nudge the sensor into position. On most openers, a small LED on each sensor tells you when alignment is good, usually a solid light versus a flickering one. Nudge slowly, and give the light a second to catch up before you decide it’s still wrong.
If cleaning and aligning don’t solve it, unplug the opener, then check the wiring running to each sensor for nicks, staples through the cable, or a connection that’s come loose at the terminal. Garage walls take a beating from stored bikes and rakes, and it’s common for a wire to get pinched over the years without anyone noticing until now.
Still stuck? The sensors themselves do fail eventually, especially in garages that swing between freezing winters and sweltering summers. Replacement units are cheap and typically universal enough to work across most major opener brands. While you’re in there, it’s worth keeping a small lens-cleaning cloth on a shelf near the opener, since a quick wipe every couple months will save you this whole troubleshooting process down the road.
