That door that closed like butter in April is now catching on the frame, scraping the floor, or refusing to latch unless you throw your shoulder into it. The good news: this is almost never a structural problem. It’s just wood doing what wood does.

Why This Happens Every Summer
Solid wood doors (and even some solid-core ones) absorb moisture from the air. As the wood cells fill with water, the door physically expands — sometimes just a millimeter or two, but that’s plenty to turn a smooth-closing door into a wrestling match. Come winter, when the air dries out, the same door often shrinks back down and might even develop gaps. So if you’ve been chasing this problem for years and never actually fixing it, that’s why: the door’s dimensions are changing with the seasons, not staying broken.
Metal and fiberglass doors are far more stable, which is one reason builders lean on them for exteriors these days. But if you’ve got an older home with original wood doors, you’re stuck managing the seasonal swell rather than eliminating it.
Find the Actual Pinch Points First
Don’t start sanding blindly. Close the door slowly and watch (or feel) where it’s catching. A quick trick: rub a piece of chalk or a dry bar of soap along the edge of the door where it meets the frame, then open and close it a few times. The chalk transfers exactly where the contact is happening, so you know precisely where to remove material instead of guessing and over-sanding a spot that was never the problem.
Fixing It Without Overcorrecting
- Sand, don’t plane, for minor swelling. A sanding block or 100-grit sandpaper is usually enough for a door that’s just a little tight. Planing removes too much wood too fast, and you’ll regret it in January when the door shrinks back and now has a permanent gap.
- Use a hand plane only for serious cases. If the door is dragging hard across the whole edge, a sharp block plane like this low-angle block plane will save your forearms compared to sanding an entire edge by hand. Take thin passes and check fit constantly.
- Check the hinges before you touch the wood at all. Sometimes the door isn’t swollen — the hinges have loosened and the door has dropped slightly, so it’s catching lower on the frame. Tighten the screws, and if the holes are stripped, swap in slightly longer screws that bite into the framing behind the jamb.
- Reseal any bare wood after sanding. Exposed wood soaks up moisture even faster than painted or sealed wood, which makes the swelling worse next summer. A coat of exterior primer and paint, or a wood sealer for stained doors, actually helps regulate how much humidity gets absorbed.
Managing Humidity Indoors Helps Too
For interior doors that are sticking — closets, bathrooms, bedrooms — the fix might have nothing to do with the door itself. Running a dehumidifier in problem rooms can keep indoor humidity in the 40-50% range, which is enough to stop a lot of minor swelling without any sanding at all. One more thing worth doing before you touch sandpaper: check the weatherstripping on exterior doors. Compressed or peeling weatherstripping can make a slightly swollen door feel much worse than it actually is, because there’s less give around the edges. Sometimes replacing a worn strip of weatherstripping solves 80 percent of the sticking without removing a single sliver of wood.
Resist the urge to fully correct for August conditions. Sand for a comfortable, not-perfect fit in summer, and you’ll likely be right back to normal once the humidity drops in fall. Overcorrect now, and you’ll be staring at a gappy door all winter wondering where the draft is coming from.
